A heart attack misdiagnosis could happen due to your gender

On Behalf of | Sep 30, 2025 | Medical Malpractice

If a doctor misdiagnoses a heart attack, it can be an incredibly serious mistake. Say that someone is rushed to the emergency room, and they need immediate treatment just to save their life. But the doctor determines that they are just having a panic attack, not a heart attack, and sends them home for rest and relaxation.

If the doctor was wrong, and it actually was a heart attack, that patient could pass away while at home. The doctor has made a fatal mistake, and the misdiagnosis could be an example of medical malpractice.

One interesting thing that some studies have found is that gender impacts the odds that this will happen to you. Statistically, doctors make this mistake more often with women than they do with men.

Why does this happen?

Often, the reason for this type of medical mistake is that male and female patients present different heart attack symptoms. But the male symptoms are more well-known, so that may be the only thing that the doctor is looking for, especially if that doctor is a man.

For instance, women may have symptoms like fatigue, nausea, dizziness, or neck and jaw pain. Men, on the other hand, tend to have classic symptoms like shortness of breath and significant chest pain. Without chest pain, many doctors may assume that it is not a heart attack, even though it certainly could be for a female patient.
